Expert neurological care focused on thorough assessment, clear guidance and personalised treatment.

The neurology service at The Coriel Clinic provides specialist assessment and management for a wide range of neurological symptoms and conditions. Our focus is on careful listening, thorough investigation and clear, personalised treatment plans — helping patients understand their symptoms and feel supported at every stage of their care.

Neurology services are led by David Paling, a highly experienced consultant neurologist with NHS practices at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and Doncaster Royal Infirmary, alongside his work at The Coriel Clinic. He is the Clinical Lead for the internationally renowned MS Centre Sheffield, which was featured in the BBC programme Can You Stop My MS and recognised with an NHS Parliamentary Award for excellence.

Dr Paling is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, Honorary Strategic Director for the Multiple Sclerosis Academy, and Chair of the Infrastructure Working Group of the MS Society. He trained at University College London, the University of Manchester and the University of Sydney, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.

While he has specialist expertise in multiple sclerosis, Dr Paling also has particular interests in headaches, epilepsy, seizures, blackouts and Parkinson’s disease. He regularly teaches general practitioners on headache diagnosis and treatment and sees patients with both straightforward and complex neurological presentations.

Patients are seen with a wide range of symptoms, including headaches, seizures, blackouts, weakness, numbness, tingling, nerve pain, visual problems, balance and walking difficulties, bladder symptoms, coordination issues and problems with dexterity. Dr Paling is experienced in assessing complex symptom patterns and takes time to explore how symptoms interact and affect daily life.

Understanding that neurological symptoms can feel worrying or overwhelming, Dr Paling works hard to put patients at ease, explain findings clearly and involve them fully in decisions about investigation and management. Care plans may include medication, further tests or practical advice, tailored to each individual. Patient experience and outcomes are regularly reviewed using the RES360 system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes – this is a very common thing that I am  asked to help with. I completely understand how unsettling and difficult this is. In the appointment we would go over the circumstances of the blackout, and if possible I would speak to anyone who had seen the blackout. Generally from this we are able to work out what caused the blackout. Not all blackouts mean that you need to stop driving, and I may be able to advise you that you can start driving again. If you have had a blackout that needs you to stop driving for a while, we would work together to inform the DVLA and make sure that you are not prevented from driving for any longer than necessary.

Yes – this is a very common thing that I am asked to do. In the appointment we would go over your symptoms and I would do some specialised neurology tests that we would do in the same appointment. This is usually enough to be sure about your diagnosis. If we do think that you have Parkinson’s disease I would be able to start some treatment straight away. Alternatively I would be able to let you know your diagnosis and suggest some treatments if you did need them.

Yes – again this is a really common thing that I am asked to help with. We would take some time to go over your headaches, how they feel for you, how they have changed over time and treatments that you had tried. We would then put together a plan to help your headaches which may include some changes to your lifestyle and medicines both to help treat the headaches when they came, and medicines to reduce the number of headaches that you are suffering from.

Absolutely. It can be quite hard to work out whether symptoms are the signs of a neurological disease, and I have 15 years experience of helping people in this situation. You would be welcome to put together some details of your symptoms at the time of booking your appointment. We can work through them together and either reassure you, or work out ways that we could check out whether there is anything else that we need to do.

If can perform a full neurological examination. If necessary I can arrange MRI scans of the brain and spinal cord. I can also arrange an electro encephalograms (EEG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG). I can arrange blood tests or work with your general practitioner to help.
