Advanced treatment for Achilles tendon pain, helping restore mobility, reduce inflammation and protect long-term tendon health.

Achilles tendon pain is a common condition that can significantly affect your ability to walk, exercise, and carry out everyday activities. Achilles tendon pain occurs when this tendon becomes irritated, inflamed, or damaged. This can develop due to overuse, sudden increases in activity, poor footwear, biomechanical issues, or age-related degeneration. In some cases, the tendon may weaken over time, increasing the risk of partial or complete rupture if left untreated.

Whether your symptoms have developed gradually or followed an injury, early assessment and appropriate treatment are key to preventing worsening pain or long-term damage.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert diagnosis and personalised treatment plans for Achilles tendon conditions, focusing on pain relief, recovery, and a safe return to activity.

What are the Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Pain?

Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and cause of the condition, but commonly include:

  • Pain or stiffness along the back of the ankle or lower calf
  • Discomfort that worsens with activity or exercise
  • Morning stiffness that improves with movement
  • Tenderness or swelling around the Achilles tendon.
  • Thickening of the tendon
  • Pain when climbing stairs or pushing off the foot.
  • Reduced strength or flexibility in the ankle

If pain is sudden, severe, or accompanied by a snapping sensation, urgent assessment is recommended to rule out tendon rupture.

What are the Types of Problems that can Affect the Achilles Tendon?

There are several conditions that can affect the Achilles tendon, ranging from mild inflammation to more serious injury. The type and severity of the condition will often influence both symptoms and treatment options.

Achilles Tendonitis Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon, often caused by repetitive strain or overuse. This irritation can lead to pain, stiffness and swelling. If not treated appropriately, tendonitis can progress to more chronic tendon damage.

Mid Portion Achilles Tendinopathy (also known as tendinosis) occurs when the tendon begins to deteriorate and develop small tears. This is usually the result of ongoing stress that prevents the tendon from healing properly, leading to persistent pain, stiffness and weakness.

Achilles Tendon Rupture A partial or complete rupture of the Achilles tendon is less common but more serious. It often occurs suddenly, particularly in active individuals or sportspeople aged between their 30s and 50s. A rupture may be accompanied by a sharp pain and a popping or cracking sensation at the back of the ankle.

Insertional Tendonitis This is where the Achilles tendon meets the bone at the back of the heel. It can often be painful, painful and inflamed. Sometimes there is a painful bursa at the back of the heel which also becomes involved in the insertional tendinitis. Changes such as heel spurs can cause a painful lump at the back of the heel.

What Treatments Are Available for Achilles Tendon Pain?

Treatment for Achilles tendon pain depends on the severity of the condition, your activity level, and overall health. At The Coriel Clinic, we take a personalised approach, offering both non-surgical and surgical options where appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Activity modification and load management
  • Targeted physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Orthotics or footwear advice
  • Anti-inflammatory measures or injections where clinically appropriate

Surgical treatment may be considered for persistent or severe cases that do not respond to conservative management. Your consultant will discuss all options in detail, ensuring you understand the benefits, risks, and expected recovery times.

Our aim is always to relieve pain, restore function, and reduce the risk of recurrence through evidence-based care and structured aftercare.
