Consultant-led assessment and treatment for ankle ligament injuries and instability, supporting recovery and long-term joint stability.

Ankle sprains and instability are common conditions that can affect people of all ages — from sports injuries to twists sustained during everyday movement. While many sprains heal naturally, persistent pain, weakness or repeated injuries may indicate underlying instability or ligament damage that benefits from specialist assessment.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert diagnosis and personalised treatment plans tailored to your lifestyle and activity goals. Whether your symptoms are new or longstanding, we focus on restoring stability, improving strength, and preventing future injury.

What Are the Symptoms of An Ankle Sprain?

Symptoms of an ankle sprain or instability can vary depending on the severity of the injury, but commonly include:

  • Pain, tenderness or throbbing around the outer ankle.
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Difficulty placing weight on the affected foot.
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • A feeling of “giving way” or instability.
  • Repeated sprains or a persistent ache after activity

In more severe cases, you may notice significant swelling, an inability to bear weight, or a popping sound at the time of injury. If symptoms are severe or do not improve with rest, specialist assessment is recommended.

What Treatments are Available for Ankle Sprains and Instabilities?

Treatment for ankle sprains and instability depends on the severity of the injury and your individual needs. At The Coriel Clinic, we offer a personalised, consultant-led approach with both non-surgical and surgical options when appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments commonly include:

  • Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) in early injury stages.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength, balance and proprioception.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) painkillers that help reduce inflammation.
  • Functional rehabilitation programmes tailored to your activity level.
  • Brace or cast – a rigid boot or plaster cast is used to immobilise the foot.
  • Activity modification and guidance to reduce strain.

Surgical treatment may be considered if instability persists despite conservative care, or in cases of significant ligament damage. Your consultant will discuss all options clearly, explaining the benefits, risks and expected recovery so you can make an informed decision.

Our goal is to reduce pain, restore ankle stability and function, and help you return safely to everyday life or sport.
