Advanced treatment for bunion deformities, helping reduce pain and improve foot alignment.

Bunions are a common foot condition that can cause pain, swelling and difficulty wearing everyday shoes. They develop when the base of the big toe shifts out of place, leading to a bony bump on the side of the foot. While many bunions start gradually, over time they can affect balance, gait and comfort, especially during walking or prolonged standing. Left untreated, bunions can lead to foot deformities and arthritis in the joints of the big toe. A bunion is sometimes called a hallux valgus which comes from the Latin for “big toe pointing outwards”.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert assessment and personalised care for bunion pain. We focus on accurate diagnosis, effective non-surgical options where appropriate, and surgical solutions for more advanced cases — helping you live with less pain and more freedom.

Symptoms of bunions can vary from mild irritation to significant discomfort, and commonly include:

  • A visible bump at the base of the big toe
  • Pain, tenderness or soreness around the joint
  • Swelling, redness or inflammation
  • Stiffness or reduced movement in the big toe
  • Pain when walking, standing or wearing shoes.
  • Corns or calluses where the toes rub together.
  • Difficulty fitting into normal footwear.
  • Having a bunion may also lead to other foot problems including – Hammertoes, when the toes curl under themselves and Bursitis when the bony lump protrudes.

If pain is persistent or affecting your daily activities, specialist evaluation can help determine the best treatment for your condition.

What Treatments are Available for Bunion Pain?

Treatment for bunion pain depends on the severity of your symptoms and how much they affect everyday life. At The Coriel Clinic, we offer a range of tailored options, from conservative management to advanced surgical techniques when needed.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Advice on footwear modifications to reduce pressure.
  • Custom orthotics or padding to support alignment including insoles and orthotics.
  • Physiotherapy to improve foot mechanics.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures for pain relief
  • Cortisone injections can be used, especially if the toe is also arthritic.
  • Splints can be used to help with pain, and they may help realign and straighten the toes.
  • A more common way of managing bunions is keyhole / minimally invasive surgery.

Surgical treatment may be recommended if conservative care does not provide sufficient relief or if the bunion is significantly affecting function. There are a variety of surgical techniques designed to realign the toe, relieve pressure and improve foot mechanics. Your consultant will explain the most suitable approach based on your individual needs, expected outcomes and recovery plan.

Our goal is always to reduce pain, restore comfort, and help you move more freely — with care guided by consultant expertise at every step.
