Expert care for toe and foot deformities, focused on improving foot alignment and movement.

Toe and foot deformities, including hammertoes, claw toes and mallet toes can cause discomfort, pain and difficulty with walking, affecting everyday life, footwear choices and activity levels.

Each condition affects a different bone/joint in the toe:

  • Claw toe is where the toe is raised up at the first joint giving it a claw-like appearance.
  • Hammertoe affects the middle joint in the toe and the top part of the toe bends under itself.
  • Mallet toes are similar to hammertoe except it affects the top joint and only the uppermost part of the toe bends under.
  • Tailor’s bunion is similar to a big toe bunion except it forms on the little toe instead.

These deformities may develop gradually over time or as the result of long-standing biomechanical issues, injury, arthritis or structural imbalance.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert assessment and personalised care for toe and foot deformities. We focus on accurate diagnosis, tailored treatment plans and outcomes that reduce pain and improve function. Whether your symptoms are mild or significantly affecting your mobility, we are here to help you move more comfortably and confidently.

What are the Symptoms of Toe & Foot Deformity?

Symptoms of toe and foot deformity can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition, but commonly include:

  • Visible changes in toe or foot shape
  • Pain or aching around the toes, forefoot or mid-foot.
  • Corns, calluses or skin irritation from rubbing against shoes.
  • Difficulty fitting into or wearing normal footwear.
  • Stiffness or reduced flexibility in the toes or foot
  • Pain when walking, standing or during physical activity.
  • A feeling of imbalance or pressure on one area of the foot

Deformities may also lead to secondary symptoms such as altered gait patterns, discomfort in the ankle or knee, or chronic irritation if left untreated.

What Treatments are Available for Toe & Foot Deformity?

Treatment for toe and foot deformities depends on the specific condition, symptom severity and your individual needs. At The Coriel Clinic, we offer personalised, consultant-led care with both non-surgical and surgical options where appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Footwear advice and modifications to reduce pressure and improve comfort.
  • Custom orthotics to support alignment and redistribute load.
  • Padding or splinting to protect irritated areas.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength, flexibility and gait mechanics.
  • Activity modification to reduce strain on affected areas.

These approaches aim to relieve discomfort, prevent symptom progression and improve functional mechanics.

Surgical treatment may be recommended when conservative care has not provided sufficient relief, or where structural correction is required to improve alignment and function.
