Specialist diagnosis and treatment for arthritis affecting the hand and wrist, helping relieve pain and restore function.

Arthritis of the hand and wrist occurs when the cartilage that cushions the joints begins to break down, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced movement. While it is often associated with ageing, arthritis can also develop after injury, repetitive use or biomechanical imbalance.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide thorough assessment and tailored treatment plans to help manage symptoms, preserve function and improve quality of life. Using a combination of advanced diagnostics, evidence-based therapies and supportive care, we help patients find relief and maintain everyday activities with greater comfort.

What Are the Symptoms of Hand Arthritis?

Symptoms of hand and wrist arthritis can vary depending on the joint affected and the severity of the condition, but commonly include:

  • Persistent pain or aching in the hand or wrist joints.
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after rest
  • Swelling or tenderness around affected joints
  • Reduced grip strength or difficulty holding objects.
  • Difficulty with fine movements, such as writing or buttoning.
  • Joint deformity or bony enlargements in advanced cases
  • Cracking or grinding sensations with movement.

These symptoms can interfere with daily tasks, making hands feel weak, uncomfortable or less functional.

What Treatments Are Available for Hand Arthritis?

Treatment for hand and wrist arthritis depends on symptom severity, your activity level and how much the condition affects your daily life. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with both non-surgical and surgical options where appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Activity modification and load management to reduce joint stress.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength and flexibility.
  • Custom splints or braces to support alignment and reduce pain.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures for symptom relief
  • Injections such as steroid or hyaluronic acid to reduce inflammation and lubricate joints.

These conservative approaches aim to reduce pain, preserve movement and delay progression.

Surgical treatment may be considered if symptoms persist despite conservative care or if structural damage is significant. Your consultant will discuss the most appropriate options for you, including expected benefits, risks and recovery guidance, so you can make an informed decision.

Our goal is to help you achieve lasting comfort and improved hand and wrist function with expert support at every stage.
