Specialist diagnosis and treatment for hand osteoarthritis, helping reduce pain and improve movement.

Osteoarthritis of the hand is a common degenerative joint condition that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the joints gradually wears away. This can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced grip strength, often affecting everyday activities like writing, gripping objects or opening jars.

Although osteoarthritis becomes more common with age, it can also develop following repetitive use, previous injury, genetic predisposition or biomechanical imbalance. At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert assessment and tailored treatment plans designed to help manage symptoms and maintain hand function for as long as possible.

What Are the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the Hand?

Symptoms of hand osteoarthritis can vary in intensity and may affect one or multiple joints in the fingers or thumb, but commonly include:

  • Pain or aching in the affected joints, often during or after use.
  • Stiffness, especially on waking or after rest
  • Swelling or tenderness around the finger or thumb joints
  • Reduced grip strength or difficulty holding objects.
  • Bony enlargements (nodes) at the joint surfaces
  • Cracking, grinding or clicking sensations during movement.

These symptoms can impact day-to-day activities and make fine motor tasks more challenging.

What Treatments Are Available for Osteoarthritis of the Hand?

Treatment for osteoarthritis of the hand depends on the severity of symptoms, your lifestyle and how much the condition affects your daily life. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with both conservative and advanced options where appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Activity modification and ergonomic advice to reduce strain.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength, flexibility and joint mechanics.
  • Splints or braces to support affected joints and reduce pain.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures to manage discomfort.
  • Injection therapy, such as corticosteroid or lubricating injections, to reduce pain and inflammation.

These approaches aim to relieve symptoms, improve function and slow progression.

Surgical treatment may be considered when conservative care does not provide sufficient relief or if joint damage significantly limits hand use. Your consultant will discuss all suitable options with you — including expected outcomes, risks and recovery — so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Our goal is to support your comfort, preserve hand function and help you maintain independence in everyday tasks through expert, evidence-based care.
