Specialist assessment and treatment for sports-related injuries affecting the hand and wrist, helping restore strength, mobility and support a safe return to activity.

Hand and wrist sports injuries involve damage to the bones, ligaments, tendons or soft tissues of the hand and wrist as a result of physical activity. These injuries are particularly common in sports that involve gripping, throwing, catching or repetitive wrist movements, as well as activities where falls or impact are likely.

Sports such as tennis, golf, gymnastics, rugby, climbing and weightlifting place significant stress on the joints and structures of the hand and wrist. Injuries may occur suddenly following trauma, such as falling onto an outstretched hand, or develop gradually due to repeated strain and overuse.

Common types of injuries include:

  • Sprains and ligament injuries
  • Fractures (e.g. scaphoid fracture)
  • Tendon injuries or tendonitis
  • Dislocations
  • Overuse injuries
  • Nerve compression (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome)

Early assessment is important to ensure accurate diagnosis and prevent ongoing weakness, instability or long-term joint problems.

What Are the Symptoms of Hand & Sports Wrist Injuries

Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the injury. Some injuries cause immediate pain and swelling, while others may develop gradually over time. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the hand, wrist, or forearm
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Reduced grip strength
  • Stiffness or limited movement
  • Tingling or numbness (especially with nerve involvement)
  • Clicking or instability in the joint
  • Pain during activity or when weight-bearing through the hand

If symptoms persist or worsen, specialist assessment is recommended to identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment.

What Treatments Are Available for Hand & Sports Wrist Injuries

Treatment depends on the specific injury, its severity and the individual needs of the patient. In many cases, hand and wrist sports injuries respond well to non-surgical treatment.

  • Rest and Activity Modification Avoiding aggravating activities helps reduce stress on the injured area.
  • Immobilisation Splints or braces may be used to support healing, particularly for fractures or ligament injuries.
  • Physiotherapy Rehabilitation focuses on restoring strength, mobility, and function.
  • Pain and Inflammation Management including – Ice therapy, Anti-inflammatory medication (if appropriate) and Manual therapy.
  • Exercise Rehabilitation Progressive strengthening and mobility exercises are key to a safe return to sport.
  • Injection Therapy In some cases, corticosteroid injections may help reduce inflammation.
  • Surgery Required in more severe cases, such as complex fractures, ligament tears, or persistent nerve compression.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to support full recovery and enable a safe return to sport and everyday activities.
