Specialist diagnosis and treatment for trigger finger, helping relieve pain and restore smooth finger movement.

Trigger finger — also known as stenosing tenosynovitis — occurs when the tendon that bends your finger becomes irritated or thickened, making it difficult for the tendon to glide smoothly through its sheath. This can cause discomfort, stiffness and a catching or locking sensation when you bend or straighten your finger.

Trigger finger often develops gradually and may affect one or multiple digits. It can make everyday tasks such as gripping objects, typing, or making a fist uncomfortable or challenging. At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert diagnosis and tailored treatment strategies designed to relieve symptoms and restore comfortable hand movement.

What Are the Symptoms of Trigger Finger?

Symptoms of trigger finger can vary in severity, but commonly include:

  • Finger stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Pain or tenderness at the base of the affected finger or thumb
  • A catching, clicking, or locking sensation when bending or straightening the finger.
  • A feeling of the finger being “stuck” in a bent position.
  • Painful popping as the finger moves.
  • Mild swelling around the affected tendon

Symptoms often start intermittently but can become more constant and limiting over time if not addressed.

What Treatments Are Available for Trigger Finger?

Treatment for trigger finger depends on the severity of symptoms, functional impact, and your individual needs. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with both conservative and advanced options where appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Activity modification and load management to reduce tendon irritation.
  • Splinting or bracing to limit movement and support healing.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to optimise tendon glide and strength.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Steroid injection therapy to decrease inflammation and improve movement.

These approaches aim to ease symptoms and improve function without surgery.

Surgical treatment may be recommended if symptoms are persistent, significantly restrict movement or do not respond to conservative care. Surgical release of the affected tendon sheath can improve tendon glide and restore smoother finger movement.

Your consultant will discuss all suitable options, including expected benefits, risks, and recovery expectations, to help you make an informed decision about your care.

Our goal is to help you return to comfortable, pain-free hand movement with expert support every step of the way.
