Expert care for hip dysplasia, focused on improving hip stability and supporting comfortable movement.

Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip socket does not fully cover the ball of the hip joint, leading to instability, abnormal joint mechanics and increased stress on cartilage and surrounding tissues. While it is often identified in childhood, hip dysplasia can also present or persist into adulthood — particularly if symptoms become more noticeable with activity, changes in lifestyle, or age-related wear.

If left untreated, hip dysplasia may contribute to hip pain, labral tears or early osteoarthritis. At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert diagnosis and tailored treatment plans focused on improving hip function, reducing pain and supporting long-term joint health.

What Are the Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia?

Symptoms of hip dysplasia can vary depending on severity and activity level, but commonly include:

  • Pain or aching in the groin or outer hip, often with activity.
  • A feeling of instability or “giving way” in the hip.
  • Reduced range of hip movement
  • Clicking, catching or popping sensations in the joint
  • Discomfort during prolonged standing or walking.
  • Pain when turning, twisting or rising from sitting.

Symptoms may be subtle at first and can gradually increase over time. Because they overlap with other hip conditions, specialist assessment is recommended for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care plan.v

What Treatments Are Available for Hip Dysplasia?

Treatment for hip dysplasia depends on your age, symptoms, activity levels and the degree of joint instability. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with both non-surgical and surgical options when appropriate.

Non-Surgical Treatments

For mild cases or those with minimal symptoms, conservative care may help relieve pain and improve function:

  • Activity modification to reduce pain-provoking movements.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to strengthen hip stabilising muscles and improve mechanics.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures to manage discomfort.
  • Advice on lifestyle adaptations to support joint stability.

These approaches aim to enhance stability, reduce pain and improve overall hip function.

Surgical Treatments

When symptoms are persistent or structural instability is significant, surgical intervention may be recommended. Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) and other corrective procedures can reshape the hip socket to improve joint coverage and biomechanics, reducing pain and slowing degenerative changes.

Your consultant will discuss the most appropriate surgical options for your condition, including expected benefits, risks and recovery expectations, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
