Specialist assessment and treatment for hip sprains, helping relieve pain, restore stability and support safe recovery.

A hip sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the hip joint are stretched or torn — usually as a result of sudden movement, a fall, twisting injury, or overextension during activity. While less common than sprains in the ankle or knee, hip sprains can still cause significant discomfort and limit your ability to walk, run or perform everyday tasks.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert assessment and personalised treatment plans to help you recover safely, reduce pain, and regain strength and mobility. We focus on accurate diagnosis and evidence-based care tailored to your needs and activity goals.

What Are the Symptoms of Hip Sprains?

Symptoms of a hip sprain can vary depending on the severity of the injury, but commonly include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the hip or groin area
  • Swelling or bruising around the hip
  • Reduced range of movement
  • Difficulty walking or bearing weight.
  • Muscle tightness or weakness around the hip
  • Pain with activity or specific movements (e.g., twisting or bending)

In more severe cases, symptoms may be more intense and persist longer without appropriate care. If pain and mobility issues continue for more than a few days, specialist evaluation is recommended.

What Treatments Are Available for Hip Sprains?

Treatment for hip sprains depends on the severity of the injury, your lifestyle and functional goals. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care that may include both non-surgical and, when appropriate, advanced treatment options.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Most hip sprains can be effectively managed without surgery using a combination of:

  • Rest and activity modification to allow healing.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength, flexibility and joint mechanics.
  • Pain-relief strategies including anti-inflammatory measures.
  • Gradual rehabilitation programmes to support return to normal function.
  • Manual therapies to address muscle tightness and movement patterns.

These approaches aim to reduce pain, promote healing and prevent re-injury.

Specialist Assessment and Referral

If symptoms do not improve with conservative care, or if there are concerns about more complex injuries (such as concurrent labral tears or instability), your consultant will review your situation and discuss further options. This may include advanced imaging or referral for targeted treatments.

Our goal is always to help you return to comfortable, pain-free activity with expert guidance and continuity of care throughout your recovery.
