Advanced treatment for Baker’s cysts, helping reduce discomfort and support better knee movement.

A Baker’s cyst — also known as a popliteal cyst — is a fluid-filled swelling that develops behind the knee. It often forms when excess joint fluid is pushed into a small sac (bursa) at the back of the knee, resulting in a noticeable lump or swelling.

While Baker’s cysts can occur for a variety of reasons, they are frequently associated with underlying knee conditions such as osteoarthritis, meniscal tears or inflammation. The cyst itself may cause discomfort, tightness or restricted movement — particularly when bending or extending the knee.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert assessment and tailored treatment plans designed to identify the cause of your symptoms, reduce pain and support improved knee function.

Symptoms of a Baker’s cyst can vary, but commonly include:

  • A visible lump or swelling behind the knee.
  • Tightness or discomfort when bending or straightening the knee.
  • Pain or aching in the knee or calf, particularly after activity.
  • Stiffness or restricted range of motion
  • In some cases, cramping or discomfort in the calf muscle.

Symptoms may come and go, and a cyst may increase in size with activity or decrease at rest. If the cyst ruptures, symptoms such as sudden pain, swelling and redness may occur in the calf.

Baker’s Cyst

Treatment for a Baker’s cyst typically focuses on addressing both the cyst itself and the underlying condition that contributed to its formation. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with tailored options designed to relieve symptoms and improve overall knee health.

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatments

For many patients, non-surgical management can reduce symptoms and improve mobility, including:

  • Activity modification to reduce knee strain.
  • Targeted physiotherapy to strengthen surrounding muscles and improve knee mechanics.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Joint injections, such as steroid or image-guided injections, to reduce inflammation.

These approaches aim to address pain and functional limitations without the need for surgery.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery may be recommended when symptoms are persistent, significantly limit activity, or when there is an identifiable structural cause that requires correction. Surgical options may involve addressing the underlying knee pathology (e.g., meniscal tear or cartilage issue) and may include cyst drainage or removal as part of the overall treatment strategy.

Your consultant will explain all suitable options, including expected benefits, risks and recovery guidance, so you can make an informed decision about your care.

At The Coriel Clinic, our goal is to help you achieve lasting comfort, improved knee function and confidence in your everyday movement with expert support at every stage.
