Specialist diagnosis and treatment for sports-related knee injuries, helping restore stability and reduce pain.

Knee sports injuries are common in both professional athletes and people who enjoy recreational physical activity. The knee joint is heavily involved in movements such as running, jumping, pivoting and sudden changes in direction, which makes it particularly vulnerable to injury during sport.

These injuries can affect the ligaments, cartilage, tendons or bones within the knee. Sports that place high stress on the knee — such as football, rugby, skiing, tennis and athletics — are often associated with a higher risk of injury.

Common knee sports injuries include meniscus tears, ligament injuries (such as ACL or MCL damage), tendon irritation or tendonitis, and bone bruising caused by impact or sudden twisting movements. Early assessment and appropriate treatment are important to ensure the knee heals properly and to reduce the risk of ongoing instability or recurrent injury.

At The Coriel Clinic, our specialists provide expert diagnosis and personalised treatment plans designed to relieve symptoms, restore function and help patients return safely to sport and everyday activities.

What Are the Symptoms of Knee Sports Injuries?

Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the injury, but common signs include:

  • Swelling around the knee, often occurring shortly after sporting activity or injury
  • Pain during twisting or turning movements, particularly when changing direction
  • Locking or catching sensations within the joint
  • Reduced performance or difficulty continuing activity
  • Localised tenderness or pain in specific areas of the knee
  • Pain when jumping, running or placing weight through the knee
  • Instability or the feeling that the knee may give way

If symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with activity, a specialist assessment can help identify the underlying cause.

What Treatments Are Available for Knee Sports Injuries?

Treatment will depend on the type of injury, its severity and the patient’s activity level. In many cases, knee sports injuries can be successfully managed with non-surgical treatment.

Accurate Diagnosis and Rehabilitation

An accurate diagnosis is the first step in effective treatment. Your specialist may recommend imaging such as MRI or ultrasound scans to assess the structures within the knee. Rehabilitation programmes are then tailored to support recovery.

Phased Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy

A structured rehabilitation programme focuses on restoring mobility, strength and stability in the knee. Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping patients recover safely and regain confidence in movement.

Return-to-Sport Conditioning

Once symptoms improve, a gradual return-to-sport conditioning programme may be recommended to rebuild strength, coordination and endurance while reducing the risk of reinjury.

Imaging and Surgical Referral (When Needed)

In some cases — such as significant ligament tears or persistent mechanical symptoms — further imaging or surgical treatment may be considered. Surgery is only recommended when appropriate and after careful assessment by your specialist.

Early diagnosis and the right treatment approach can help prevent long-term knee problems and support a safe return to sports
