Specialist assessment and treatment for shoulder instability, supporting improved joint stability and function.

Shoulder instability occurs when the structures that normally hold the shoulder joint in place — including ligaments, tendons and the joint capsule — become stretched, torn or weakened. This can allow the upper arm bone (humerus) to move abnormally within the socket, leading to repeated dislocations or a feeling that the shoulder may “slip” out of place.

Instability can develop from injury, repetitive overuse (often in overhead sports), or gradual wear and tear. It can cause pain, weakness and a loss of confidence in the shoulder during everyday activities and sporting movements.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert evaluation and tailored treatment plans designed to relieve symptoms, improve stability and support a return to comfortable, pain-free shoulder use.

What Are the Symptoms of Shoulder Instability?

Symptoms of shoulder instability can vary depending on severity and underlying cause, but commonly include:

  • A sensation of the shoulder “giving way” or feeling unstable.
  • Repeated subluxations or dislocations
  • Pain with movement, particularly overhead or behind the back
  • Weakness in the shoulder or arm
  • Catching, clicking or grinding sensations
  • Apprehension or fear of recurring instability during certain activities

These symptoms can impact daily tasks such as reaching, lifting and dressing, and may interfere with participation in sport or exercise.

What Treatments Are Available for Hand Shoulder Instability?

Treatment for shoulder instability depends on the severity of symptoms, the extent of structural damage and your individual lifestyle goals. At The Coriel Clinic, we provide personalised, consultant-led care with both conservative and surgical options where appropriate.

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatments

Many patients benefit from non-surgical management, particularly in less severe cases or as a first-line approach:

  • Targeted physiotherapy to strengthen shoulder stabilisers and improve joint mechanics.
  • Activity modification to avoid positions that provoke instability.
  • Postural and movement retraining to enhance control and support.
  • Anti-inflammatory measures to reduce pain and irritation.

These approaches aim to enhance muscular support around the joint, improve movement patterns and reduce symptoms.

Surgical Treatments

Surgery may be recommended when instability persists despite conservative care, or when there is recurrent dislocation or significant structural damage. Surgical options vary depending on the specific pathology and may include:

  • Arthroscopic stabilisation to repair torn ligaments or tighten the joint capsule.
  • Labral repair to restore support around the socket.
  • Capsular shift procedures to improve joint stability.

Your consultant will explain all suitable options in detail, including expected benefits, risks and recovery expectations, so you can make an informed decision about your care.

At The Coriel Clinic, our goal is to support you with expert diagnosis, personalised treatment and continuity of care — helping you regain confidence and function in your shoulder.
