Consultant-led assessment and treatment for sports-related shoulder injuries, supporting improved strength and joint stability.

Shoulder sports injuries are conditions affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments or bones of the shoulder that occur as a result of physical activity. They are particularly common in sports involving repetitive overhead movements or forceful use of the arm, such as swimming, tennis, cricket, rugby and weightlifting.

These injuries can range from mild strains and inflammation to more complex problems such as tendon tears, joint instability or dislocations. Shoulder sports injuries can cause pain, weakness and reduced performance, and may interfere with both sporting activity and everyday tasks.

At The Coriel Clinic, our consultant-led specialists provide expert diagnosis and tailored treatment plans designed to relieve pain, restore movement and support a safe return to sport and activity.

What Are the Symptoms of Arthritis of Shoulder Sports Injuries ?

Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the injury, but commonly include:

  • Pain during movement or activity
  • Weakness in the shoulder or arm
  • Limited range of motion
  • Swelling or tenderness
  • A clicking, popping, or grinding sensation
  • Instability or feeling the shoulder may “give way”
  • Pain at night or when lying on the affected side

If symptoms persist or worsen with activity, specialist assessment is recommended to prevent further injury.

What Treatments Are Available for Shoulder Sports Injuries?

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. Many shoulder sports injuries can be successfully managed without surgery using:

  • Rest and activity modification to allow healing
  • Ice and anti-inflammatory measures to reduce pain and swelling
  • Targeted physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes
  • Strengthening and conditioning exercises to restore stability and function
  • Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation in selected cases
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, where appropriate, to support tissue healing

These approaches aim to relieve symptoms, improve shoulder mechanics and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Surgical Treatments

Surgery may be recommended for severe injuries, structural damage, or when symptoms persist despite conservative care. Surgical options vary depending on the injury and may include:

  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Labral repair
  • Stabilisation procedures for recurrent instability

Your consultant will discuss all suitable options, including expected outcomes, risks and recovery timelines, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
