Specialist care for vascular conditions, offering expert diagnosis and treatment for circulation and vein problems.

The Coriel Clinic offers specialist vascular services led by Mr Jan Macierewicz FRCS (Eng), a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary with private practice at The Coriel Clinic. With extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease, Mr Macierewicz provides expert, consultant-led care for patients experiencing conditions affecting the arteries and veins.

Vascular conditions can impact circulation and may lead to symptoms such as pain, swelling, visible veins or changes in skin appearance. Early assessment and treatment are important to prevent symptoms from worsening and to support long-term vascular health.

One of the most common vascular conditions treated is varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen and twisted veins that typically appear just beneath the surface of the skin, most often in the legs and feet. They develop when the small one-way valves within the veins weaken or become damaged. Normally, these valves help blood flow back toward the heart, but when they stop working effectively, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to stretch, swell and become visible.

At The Coriel Clinic, patients receive expert assessment and personalised treatment plans designed to relieve symptoms, improve circulation and restore comfort and confidence.

Common Signs of Varicose Veins

People with varicose veins may notice:

  • Bulging, twisted veins that are blue or dark purple
  • Aching, heavy, or tired legs
  • Swelling in the lower legs or ankles
  • Burning or throbbing sensations
  • Itching around the veins
  • Muscle cramps, especially at night

Symptoms often worsen after long periods of standing or sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1.  Age – vein valves weaken over time
  2.  Family history of vein problems
  3.  Pregnancy
  4.  Being overweight
  5.  Standing for long periods (common in some jobs)
  6.  Hormonal changes

In many cases, varicose veins are mainly a cosmetic concern, but sometimes they can lead to complications such as:

  • Persistent swelling
  • Skin changes or discoloration
  • Venous ulcers
  • Blood clots in superficial veins

If you experience pain, skin changes, or swelling, it’s best to seek medical advice.

Varicose veins do not always require treatment. However, treatment may be recommended when they:

  • Cause pain, aching, heaviness, or burning in the legs
  • Lead to swelling in the ankles or feet
  • Cause skin changes such as discoloration or thickening
  • Result in bleeding, ulcers, or blood clots
  • Become progressively larger or more uncomfortable
  • Affect your confidence or quality of life

A vascular specialist can assess the veins using an ultrasound scan to determine whether treatment would be beneficial.

Results depend on the type of treatment used.

  • Endovenous laser or radiofrequency treatments: Veins usually close immediately, but visible improvement occurs over 2–6 weeks.
  • Sclerotherapy: Smaller veins gradually fade over 3–6 weeks, sometimes longer.
  • Surgical treatments: Bruising may take 2–4 weeks to settle before full cosmetic improvement is seen.

In many cases, symptoms such as aching or heaviness improve within a few days to weeks after treatment.

Lifestyle measures can help manage symptoms, but they usually do not remove existing varicose veins. Non-treatment options include:

  • Compression stockings
  • Regular exercise
  • Elevating the legs
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding long periods of standing or sitting

These approaches may slow progression and reduce discomfort, but medical procedures are typically required to eliminate the veins permanently. Common treatments include:

  • Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT)
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Phlebectomy or minimally invasive surgery
