Patient Stories CQC Registered Convenient Location Consultant Lead Modern Facilities Accessible AppointmentsBunion Correction & Midfoot FusionOne of our patients recently attended The Coriel Clinic for treatment to address a painful bunion and arthritis in the midfoot. The patient had been experiencing worsening symptoms for around two years, with pain and swelling affecting everyday activities such as walking and even driving. The condition involved a bunion deformity, where the big toe had begun to lean inward, creating a prominent bump on the side of the foot. In addition, the patient was experiencing midfoot arthritis, causing inflammation and pain across the middle of the foot.Interestingly, the patient had previously undergone the same procedure on the opposite foot six years earlier with excellent results, which gave her confidence in proceeding with treatment again. The procedure involved bunion correction using a surgical technique known as a Scarf osteotomy, where the big toe was carefully realigned and secured with small screws to restore normal positioning and maintain joint movement. At the same time, the arthritic midfoot joint was treated with a midfoot fusion, where the damaged joint surfaces were removed and stabilised with a small plate and bone graft to relieve pain and improve stability. The surgery was carried out under local anaesthetic with a popliteal nerve block, meaning the patient remained awake but felt no pain during the procedure.Reflecting on her experience, the patient said:“I found the anaesthetic absolutely fine. My foot went warm and then gradually numb, so I knew I couldn’t feel anything. During the operation it was completely comfortable.”She explained that the pain had slowly begun to limit her daily activities:“I enjoy walking, but over the last couple of years it started to hurt more and more, especially on longer walks. Even driving became uncomfortable because of bending my foot.”Having had a successful outcome with her previous surgery, she felt confident about the treatment:“The operation on my other foot made a massive difference, so I knew this would help.”The patient also shared positive feedback about the experience at The Coriel Clinic:“The facilities are really good. From the moment you walk in at reception you’re made to feel welcome and at ease. It’s a great little clinic — very friendly and very personal. Everyone can’t do enough for you.”This case highlights how combined bunion correction and midfoot fusion surgery can successfully address both deformity and arthritis, helping patients return to walking comfortably and regain confidence in their mobility. For more information or to book an appointment at Coriel Clinic, please fill out the contact form below, or call the team on 01302 238 291 or email enquiries@corielortho.com
